Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions regarding homeowners, renters, landlord, and car insurance coverage.

What is the difference between homeowners and renters insurance?
Homeowners insurance protects both the physical building structure (the dwelling) and your personal possessions, along with comprehensive personal liability. Renters insurance protects only the tenant's personal property, personal liability, and temporary loss of use. Renters insurance never covers the physical apartment or building structure.
Can I use a regular homeowners policy for my rental property?
No. A standard homeowners policy (such as an HO-3) requires owner-occupancy. If you lease the property to long-term or short-term tenants, claims may be denied. You must secure a dedicated landlord insurance policy (often called a DP-3 or dwelling fire policy) which includes coverage for landlord liability and lost rental income.
What does "Full Coverage" auto insurance actually mean?
"Full coverage" is an informal industry term, not a single standardized policy. It generally refers to a combination of state-required liability insurance (bodily injury and property damage) plus collision coverage (damage to your car from an accident) and comprehensive coverage (damage from theft, weather, vandalism, or animal collisions).
Are flood and earthquake damage covered under standard homeowners insurance?
Standard homeowners and renters policies almost universally exclude flood damage and earthquake movements. Flood coverage must be purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private flood insurers, and earthquake protection requires a separate endorsement or specialized policy.
